Alan PeltonAfter graduating from the University of Pittsburgh with an undergraduate degree in psychology, Alan began working for the Allegheny County Adult Probation Department, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, in 1991. The first 15 years of his career were spent superising a 'regular' caseload in a regional field office, before becoming a supervisor in March of 2006. In the fall of 2007 Alan returned to school and obtained a Master of Science degree in the Administration of Justice and Security from the University of Phoenix. In addition to his work in the field of Probation and Parole, Alan has also been studying, practicing, and teaching a number of martial arts and self-defense courses since 1984. Over the years Alan has achieved masters rank in Tae Kwon Do, a Korean art, and godan rank in Aikido, a Japanese art that he currently studies and teaches. In fact, Alan first met Ellis at his Aikido dojo in Pittsburgh some years ago, when Ellis was presenting a martial arts seminar there. Noting the similarities of both their professional and self-defense backgrounds Ellis and Alan maintained contact over the years. When Ellis approached him about co-authoring this book, Alan eagerly accepted the opportunity to meld Ellis' dynamic approach to mental illness and de-escalation with the very real personal and public safety concerns of today's Probation and Parole Officers.
