About the Book

In September 2004, Alexander Sima was killed in a car accident in Yemen. He left behind his unfinished Habilitation on the phonology and morphology of Mahriyot, the Mehri dialect group of the eastern province of Yemen, and a set of oral texts. This volume, which is divided into two parts, includes 110 of these texts. Part one deals with texts in the standard Mahriyo-t dialect of Jodab, part two with texts from the neighbouring dialect of Rehan. This work is of particular importance for two reasons. First, it is the only work so far to include of a significant body of Mehri texts from the Yemeni Sarqiya, permitting a comparison with both the western Mehri texts published in the early twentieth century by members of the Viennese South Arabian Expedition, and with Johnstone's Omani Mehri texts published by Stroomer in 1999. Secondly, many of the texts deal with aspects and recollections of the indigenous culture, including fishing methods, traditional medicine, agriculture and animal husbandry, clothing and jewellery, tribal law, and food preparation, which are rapidly being eroded by increasing communication, education and the dominance of Arabic, and which will soon disappear from the collective memory.
