Estaba sordo por castigo de los dioses, pero su discapacidad no le impedía disfrutar de los placeres, era un ser autoritario y egoísta, así lo definía el poeta: "aunque no escuchaba ninguna voz, ni el ruido de los crótalos, gozaba de distintas maneras. Así pasaba la vida este rey barbudo que tenía patas de cabra... Era sátiro caprichoso". Además: "Tenía dos consejeros áulicos: una alondra y un asno. La primera perdió su prestigio cuando el sátiro se volvió sordo. Antes, si cansado de su lascivia soplaba su flauta dulcemente, la alondra le acompañaba." A los que veo como una representación en el caso de la alondra; de la alegría y belleza y asno como símbolo de testarudez y soberbia.Más allá del preciosismo característico en el cuento, su búsqueda de la perfección en una narrativa colmada de descripciones propias de la mitología griega, se debe considerar este cuento como un análisis del ser hecho por Darío, visto a través del propio sátiro, reflejándonos en su incapacidad por apreciar las cosas que le rodean, que puede ser no necesariamente un gobernante de un escenario extrasensorial sino un ser humano como nosotros. Lleno de complejidades e incapacidades, endebles que nos limitan y nos empequeñecen como el orgullo, la vanidad, el rencor, el menosprecio por nuestros semejantes, aceptar nuestros propios errores a pesar de ser evidentes, la sordera de aquel personaje no le permitía apreciar la belleza de la música, personaje totalitario quien ciertamente tenía también las patas de cabra y cuernos.El texto narrativo en prosa hace énfasis en la aparición de un artista, como es el caso del semidiós Orfeo, "Por aquellos días, Orfeo, poeta, espantado de la miseria de los hombres, pensó huir a los bosques, donde los troncos y las piedras le comprenderían y escucharían con éxtasis, y donde él pondría temblor de armonía y fuego de amor y de vida al sonar de su instrumento." Para Darío el arte tiene el papel fundamental de brindarle mayor esplendor a nuestra naturaleza, ¿de qué sirve admirar preciosas cascadas sino las podemos describir o pintar? ¿Cuál es el valor de la música sino la podemos apreciar? ¿De que servía aquel cántico y que brillara la luz con más fulgores? La naturaleza le rendía tributo a Orfeo, las aves, las ninfas, los árboles, las plantas, así lo describe el poeta: "Cuando Orfeo tañía su lira había sonrisa en el rostro apolíneo. Deméter sentía gozo. Las palmeras derramaban su polen, las semillas reventaban, los leones movían blandamente su crin. Una vez voló un clavel de su tallo hecho mariposa roja, y una estrella descendió fascinada y se tomó en flor de lis." Sin embargo Darío nos demuestra que la belleza es apreciada solo en ciertos seres, que esta es a pesar de su grandeza infecunda sino puede generar dentro de uno la capacidad de ver nuestro entorno con nobleza y regocijo, de disfrutar la alegría de los demás, de sentir júbilo por la felicidad de otros, vehemencia de construir un mundo no solo plenamente justo, sino también colmadamente bello. El cuento muestra al sátiro incapaz de alegrarse por el regocijo que los otros sentían, podía mirar perfectamente, pero lejos de apreciar su entorno solo conseguía apreciarse a él mismo.Es notorio en la narrativa como el arte le brindaba magnificencia a la naturaleza: "y desde el principio del cantico brillo la luz con más fulgores. Los enormes troncos se conmovieron, y hubo rosas que se deshojaron y lirios que se inclinaron lánguidamente como en un dulce desmayo. Porque Orfeo haca gemir los leones y llorar los guijarros con la música de su lira rítmica...."
